There are two collection classes within the Java Collections Framework illustrated in Figure that are based on the data structure known as a tree.Trees provide an efficient structure for storing and retrieving data in some specified order. For this course, you do not need to know the details of how trees work but they are explained in many standard books on data structures. Some brief details of these two classes, TreeMap and

TreeSet,are listed below.Consult the API documentation if you requirefurther details.  

• TreeMap is an alternative implementation for maps. It is basedonthe tree data  structure and has the useful propertythat the data is sorted in key order ,unlike a  HashMap,whichguarantees no particular order for traversal of its data. It  implements the interface SortedMap,which inheritsfromthe Map interface.  
• TreeSet has been briefiymentioned earlier.Werevisit it here simply to point out  that it gives an implementation of aset class that allows accesstothe set items in  sorted order - that is, it is asorted set that implements the SortedSet interface.As  with the TreeMap class, it is based on the tree data structure.

The class Collections, also in the java.util package, is not strictly a collection class, despite its name. It is a special class with only static methods and provides a range of algorithms that can be applied to various collection classes. So, for example, it has methods for sorting, searching, reversing and randomizing items in Lists and arrays and for such things as finding the maximum or minimum value of most types of collections.
