Opto Coupler:
It combines a LED and a photo diode in a single package as shown in the figure. LED radiates light depending on the current through LED. This light falls on photo diode and these sets up the reverse current. The advantage of the opto coupler is electrical isolation in between the input and output circuits. The only contact between input and output is the beam of light. Because of this, it is likely to have an insulation resistance in between the two circuits of order of thousands of mega ohms. They can be taken in use to isolate the two circuits of different voltage levels.
