Another useful application of the light emitting diodes is Opto-coupling. An opto-coupler or opto-isolator is also called, is a single electronic device which comprises of a light emitting diode combined with a photo-transistor, photo-diode, or photo-triac to give an optical signal path among an input connection and an output connection while maintaining electrical isolation among two circuits. An opto-isolator comprises of a light proof plastic body which has a typical breakdown voltages among the input (photo-diode) and the output (photo-transistor) circuit of up to 5000 volts. This electrical isolation is mainly useful where the signal from a low voltage circuit like a battery powered circuit, computer or microcontroller, is needed to operate or control another external circuit operating at the potentially dangerous mains voltage.
