Nuclear fusion: Opposite to nuclear fusion nuclear fission, is defined as the process in which lighter nuclei fuse together to form the heavier nuclei. Though, such processes can take place at the reasonable rates only at very high temperatures of order of several million degrees, which exist only in the interior of the stars. Such processes are, thus, called Thermonuclear reactions (these are temperature dependent reactions). Once the fusion reaction initiates, the energy released in process is sufficient to maintain the temperature and to keep process to continue.
This is not a simple reaction but involves a set of the thermonuclear reactions, which occurs in the stars including sun. Or we can say that energy of sun is derived from the nuclear fission reactions.
Controlled nuclear fusion: Unlike the fission process, the fusion process cannot be controlled. As there are estimated to be some pounds of the deuterium (1H2) in water of the earth, and as each pound is equivalent in the energy to 2500 tons of coal, the controlled fusion reactor would provide a virtually inexhaustible supply of energy.
