Novell NetWare
NetWare operating systems are a series of operating systems developed by Novell, Inc[7]. These added NetWare 3.x, 4.x, 5.x, 6.x, etc.
NetWare 3.x
The NetWare 3.x series of operating systems added the versions 3.0, 3.11, 3.12, and 3.2. These operating systems provide the file and print services. NetWare 3.11, a 32-bit network OS, provides services to client workstations and client operating systems. NetWare provides several different types of services. The core services called the NetWare Core Protocol (NCP) include file access, file locking, resource tracking and allocating, event notification, and other services, which are provided to the workstations on request.
NetWare 3.11 is an ideal platform for server applications as it is modular and expandable. Additional core services, such as messaging services and communication services, can be installed by loading NetWare Loadable Modules (NLM). These services include name space support, Internet, host connectivity, messaging services, communication services, etc.
NetWare 4.x
The NetWare 4.x series of operating systems added the versions 4.0, 4.10, 4.11, IntraNetWare, and 4.2. These operating systems also give the file and print services offered by the NetWare 3.x series of operating systems.
NetWare 4.0 was an upgrade of the NetWare 3.12 version and was available for a wide range of platforms including DOS, Windows, Mac, OS/2, and some versions of UNIX. The most significant feature of NetWare 4.x was the NetWare Directory Services (NDS), which provides both users and network administrators with a single, integrated view of a network, and the servers connected to it. NDS supports a network of servers where users can log in once and access the resources of any server depending on their access rights. Users and resources such as file servers and printers are represented by NetWare Operating System as objects in the NDS tree. If any information about a network resource is required (for example, current statistics), the user has to just double-click the object that represents the resource.
NetWare 5.x
The NetWare 5.x series of operating systems added the versions 5.0 and 5.1. The earlier versions of NetWare 3.x and NetWare 4.x are LAN operating systems. NetWare 5.x series of operating systems are WAN operating systems.
NetWare 5.1 provides web-based single point administration, and fast and secure integration between business networks and the Internet. The most important feature of NetWare 5.1 is that it has the ability to convert any type of server into a Web server. It has the capability to build and manage web-based e-business applications.
NetWare 6.x
The NetWare 6.x series of operating systems added the versions 6.0 and 6.5. These operating systems enable free access to the networked resources anytime and anywhere. The NDS, introduced in the NetWare 4.x series of operating systems, is replaced by a more robust directory service called eDirectory in these operating systems.
NetWare 6.5 is an open source system and provides a browser-based interface making the synchronization of various business processes easier. Novell has added new features in NetWare 6.5 like centralized Web management, Virtual Office application, etc. The Virtual Office application allows its users to communicate and collaborate using the Internet. It provides various features like GroupWise, Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, password management, document publishing, web page creation, etc.
