Networking MIDlets:

Mobile phones (and many other mobile devices such as PDAs) achieve a considerable portion of their usefulness by being able to communicate with the outside world. It would be a distinct advantage therefore if MIDlets could make use of this connectivity.

Such connectivity is provided for by the CLDC configuration and the MIDP specification. The CLDC specification defines an abstract Generic Connection Framework (GCF) which represents all forms of external connections as one of six basic types. The two most important types are stream based connections and datagrams.

However, the CLDC specification does not define any actual implementations of any of the six connection types. This is due to the very broad range of devices that the CLDC specification covers. Instead it is the MIDP specification that provides specific implementations of the GCF. Of the six basic connection types, the MIDP specification only requires devices to implement one of the connection types, the HTTP stream-based connection. Particular devices may implement other connection types but to ensure portability the developer can only assume this one connection type. MIDP does not assume that devices are permanently attached to a network and it doesn't assume TCP/ IP is available.

Using only HTTP client connection means that the server is unable to initiate contact with the device except in reply to a request from the client. This connection has the standard HTTP methods, such as GET to request a resource from the server and POST which is used to send information to the server perhaps from a form-based query. Over time it is likely that additional connection types will become more widely available. For the present, the HTTP connection type is most widely used to download MIDlets from websites - this is the topic of the next subsection.
