Multivibrator

A multivibrator is an  electronic circuit used to implement a variety of simple two-state systems such  as   timers, oscillators,   and   flip-flops.  It is characterized by the 2 amplifying devices (transistors, electron tubes or other devices) cross-coupled by capacitors and resistors.

There are 3 types of multivibrator circuit basically:

  • astable, in this the circuit is not stable in either state-it continuously oscillates from one state to the other state. Because of this, it does not need an input (Clock pulse or other).
  • monostable, in this one of the states is stable, but other state is not-the circuit will flip into unstable state for a determined period, but will ultimately return to the stable state. This type of a circuit is useful for creating a timing period of the fixed duration in response to some external event. This circuit is usually known as a one shot also. A common application is in eliminating  switch bounce.
  • bistable, in this the circuit will remain in state indefinitely. The circuit can be flipped from one state to other state by an external event or trigger. This type of a circuit is important as fundamental building block of a  memory or register device. This circuit is called as a  latch or a  flip-flop also.

In the simplest form of it the multivibrator circuit consists of 2 cross-coupled  transistors. By using resistor-capacitor networks within circuit to define time periods of the unstable states, the various types can be implemented. The Multivibrators have applications in a range of systems where square waves or timed intervals are needed. Simple circuits tend to be inaccurate since a number of factors affect their timing, so they are used rarely where very high precision is needed.
