Multi-tier Applications
Multi-tier architecture also known as n-tier architecture,  is a client-server based  architecture in which the application processing , representation, and the data management are logically separate processes. For instance, an application that uses middle ware to service data requests between a database and a user utilize multi-tier architecture. The three-tier architecture is the most commonly used multi-tier architecture.

N-tier application architecture caters a model for developers to produce a flexible and reusable application. By splitting up an application into tiers, developers only have to modify a specific layer, than have to rewrite the entire application.

The concepts of layer and tier are often interchangeable. Normally the user interface runs on a desktop PC and utilize a standard graphical user interface, functional process logic may comprise of one or more separate modules running on a application server. An RDBMS on a database server/mainframe contains the computer data storage concept. The middle tier can  be itself multi-tiered itself .

The Three-tier architecture is defined below:

i) Presentation tier:

The presentation tier, is the topmost level of an application. It represents the information related to browsing merchandise, shopping and  purchasing cart contents. It conveys with other tiers by showing results to the client tier/ all other tiers in the network.

ii) Application tier:
It is also known as  logic tier or business logic or middle tier or data access tier. The logic tier is drawn out from the presentation tier as its own layer and controls the functionality by detailed processing.

iii) Data tier:

Data tier comprise database servers. It is the place where  information is stored and retrieved. It keeps data independent and neutral from business logic or application servers.
