DOS is a type of disk operating system. Microsoft Corporation developed DOS for IBM compatible personal computers. DOS uses a command-line interface to interact with the user and it allows only one user to perform a single task at a time. MSDOS.SYS, IO.SYS, and COMMAND.COM are the three main files in DOS.
MSDOS.SYS deals with the hardware and it consists of device drivers to handle console display and keyboard, printer, serial communication, clock, and boot disk drive. MSDOS.SYS operates application management tasks such as record management and file, memory management, access to real time clock, etc. IO.SYS is executed when the computer is booted. It is loaded before MSDOS.SYS and is responsible for operating MSDOS.SYS. COMMAND.COM is the interactive portion of the OS. It accepts user input at the command prompt and contains a set of internal commands to perform the basic functions. MS-DOS contains utility programs to format, print, restore, copy, and take backups.
