At first glance, an aglet might seem to be similar to an applet. The class files for an applet can travel across a network and then run. However, the aglet differs in two important ways - the aglet carries information about its state and it is not limited to travelling from a server to a client to run, it can and usually does move from server to server. As it has state information, it can follow a particular itinerary and return to its original host.
In order to be able to do this, the aglet requires a particular type of server - an aglet host. The migration from one server to another is only possible if the servers are aglet hosts. Each host has a security manager to ensure that the activities of the visiting aglet do not act in a way detrimental to the host. This is one of the reasons that Java has been so strongly identified with aglets. As well as providing platform independence, it also provides 'sandbox' security against possible malicious code.
