MIS strategic planning process:

The MIS strategic planning process consists of three stages. These stages are explained here:

Understanding the organizational strategy set: The first stage of the process is to identify and understand the organizational strategy set. The mission statement and objectives of many organizations are available explicitly in written form. The organization's long-term plans and latest annual reports are some of the documents that provide information on its mission and objectives. However, some documents like annual reports are prepared for public relations purposes and may lack information on the organization's future strategic approach and managerial action. Interactions with the stakeholders and functional heads can provide rich information on the possible strategies they adopt to achieve the organizational goals. To carry out these interactions, the MIS group has to delineate each stakeholder group like the employees, customers, suppliers, etc., understand their present and future goals, and finally identify and understand the organization's goals for each stakeholder.

Validation of organizational strategy set: The information obtained on the mission and objectives of the organization and its stakeholders has to be presented to the top management for validation and feedback. This step is essential to confirm the organizational stand on the objectives and strategies. The MIS group can also infer what the organization's MIS requirements are from this step. The top management is asked to rate the level of importance to be given to each piece of information presented.

Transforming organizational strategy set into MIS strategy set: This is considered as the most important step in the entire MIS strategic planning. This step involves developing the MIS objectives, constraints, and strategies based on the organizational strategy set. For example, if maintaining a high level of customer goodwill is an organizational objective, then the MIS objective based on this could be ‘to facilitate quick information leading to quicker response to customer inquiries'. If ‘high degree of decentralization' is a strategic organizational attribute, then the possible MIS design strategy could be to develop a system that is compatible with differential usage by various managers.
