Measures of dispersion:
Dispersion means scatterness. The degree to which the numerical data tend to spread about an average value is called as dispersion of the data. There are 4 measures of dispersion.
Range:
Range = L - S, where L = largest value; S = smallest value.
Coefficient of Range =
Example: The range of following set of observations 2, 3, 5, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 7, 4, 3, is
(A) 11 (B) 7
(C) 5.5 (D) 6
Solution: (B)
Quartile Deviation:
Quartile deviation =
Coefficient of Quartile Deviation =
Mean Deviation:
It is average of the modulus of deviations of observations in a series taken form mean or median.
Methods for the Calculation of Mean Deviation:
Case I: For the Ungrouped Data.
In this case the mean deviation can be given by the formula
Mean Deviation = M.D. = ,
here 'd' stands for the deviation from mean or median and |d| is always positive whether d itself is positive or negative and n is total number of items.
Case II: For Grouped data.
Let x1, x2, x3, ..., xn occur with the frequencies f1, f2, f3, ,fn respectively and let Sf = n and M can be Mean or Median, then mean deviation can be given by the formula.
Mean Deviation =
Here d = |x - M| and ∑f = n.
