MIS helps in generating a variety of reports that are useful to managers through the management reporting system. Management reporting systems are information systems that provide support to the management of the organization by providing them with various types of reports. These reports are prepared based on the inputs received from the transaction processing systems; data obtained from suppliers, customers, and business partners; and external data obtained through the Internet and other sources. There are four types of reports that are available to the managers. Each of these is briefly discussed here.
Periodic scheduled reports
These reports follow a predetermined format and are used for providing information to managers on a regular basis. An example of a periodic scheduled report is the daily sales report.
Exception reports
These reports are not generated on a regular basis but only in exceptional situations. For example, a report on customers who have taken an overdraft would need to be prepared if defaulters are to be traced.
Demand reports and responses
These reports are alternatively termed as ad hoc reports. They are generated as and when the manager requires them. Managers use queries and report generators for such reporting.
Push reports
Push reports are reports sent to the networked workstation of the manager. For example, information can be shared internally by sending reports through the corporate intranets to the networked computer systems of the managers.
