Linux was created by Linus Torvalds at the University of Helsinki in Finland. This OS was developed as an extension of MINIX, a small UNIX operating system. Linux is shown by a mascot called Tux, a penguin. The first part of Linux 0.01 was released in 1991 and the latest version (as of January 2007) was Linux 2.6
Linux was developed under the GNU General Public License. Hence, the source code is provided and is distributed openely to the general public to change, use and redistribute. However, companies can charge the users a fee for using the source code.
Linux may be used for software development, networking and also as an end-user platform. The OS is used because of its functionality and availability. Also, it is the very inexpensive yet efficient OS available to users. The features that differentiate Linux from other operating systems are:
