Linear regulators
Linear regulators are based on the devices which operate in their linear region (on the contrary, a switching regulator is based on the device forced to act as an on/off switch). In past, one or more vacuum tubes were usually used as variable resistance. The modern designs use one or more transistors instead, perhaps within the Integrated Circuit. Linear designs have the advantage of very "clean" output with the less noise introduced into their DC output, but are most often less efficient and unable to step-up or invert input voltage similar to switched supplies. All the linear regulators need a higher input than output. All the linear regulators are subject to parameter of dropout voltage.
Entire linear regulators are available as the integrated circuits. These chips come in fixed or adjustable voltage types.
