LED Displays
As well as individual color or multi-color LEDs, a number of light emitting diodes can be combined together within the single package to produce displays like bargraphs, strips, arrays and 7 segment displays. A 7 segment LED display provides a convenient way when decoded properly of displaying information or digital data in form of letters, numbers, or even alpha-numerical characters and as their name suggests, they comprises of 7 individual LEDs (the segments), within one single display package.
In order to produce the desired numbers or characters from 0 to 9 and A to F respectively, on the display the correct combination of the LED segments need to be illuminated. A standard 7 segment LED display usually has eight input connections, one for each LED segment and one which acts as a common terminal or connection for all internal segments.
- The Common Cathode Display (CCD) - In common cathode display, all cathode connections of the LEDs are joined together and individual segments are illuminated by application of the HIGH, logic "1" signal.
- The Common Anode Display (CAD) - In common anode display, all anode connections of the LEDs are joined together and individual segments are illuminated by connecting the terminals to the LOW, logic "0" signal.
