Triangle of Forces:
If 3 forces, acting at point, are represented in magnitude and direction by sides of a triangle, which are taken in order, they will remain in equilibrium.
Remark:
- In the triangle of forces it should be carefully noted that the forces should be parallel to sides of a triangle taken in order, that taken the same way round.
Lami's Theorem:
If 3 forces acting on the particle keep it in equilibrium, each is proportional to the sine of angle between the other 2.
Therefore if the forces are P, Q and R and a, b, g be angles between Q, R; R, P; and P, Q respectively then if forces are in equilibrium, we have
Example: Forces P, Q and R acting along OA, OB and OC, where O is circumcentre of triangle ABC are in equilibrium. Prove that
.
Solution: Ð BOC = 2A, ÐCOA = 2B, ÐAOB = 2C
Applying Lami's Theorem , we get
Apply the sine rule and cosine rule to get
