Interpreting Primal-Dual Optimum Solutions

Once the dual problem has been formulated and solved, there remains the vital step of correctly interpreting the optimum solution to the primal. The solution values for the primal can be read directly from the optimum solution table of the dual as described in the following steps.

Step1. Locate the slack/surplus variables in the dual problem. These correspond to the primal basic variables in the optimum solution.

Step2. Read the values of the elements in the index row corresponding to the columns of he slack/surplus variables with changed sign. This directly gives the optimum values of the basic primal variables.

Step3. Values for the slack variables of the prima are given by the index row under the non-basic variables of the dual solution with changed sign.

Step4. The value of the objective function is same for primal and dual problem.
