Hydroquinone or quinol (1, 4-Dihydroxy benzene)

         (1) Preparation of Hydroquinone or quinol  : It is formed by reduction of p-benzoquinone with sulphurous acid (H₂SO₃ = H₂O + SO₂).

         (p-Benzoquinone is generated by oxidation of aniline)

        (2) Properties : It is a colourless crystalline solid, melting points 170°C. it is soluble in water. It also indicates tautomerism. It provides blue colour with FeCl₃ solution.

         It acts as a powerful reducing agent as it is easily oxidised to p-benzoquinone. It replaces  Fehling's solution and Tollen's reagent.

         Due to these charters tics, it is needed as photographic developer.

         (3) Uses : It is used as an antiseptic, developer in photography, in the preparation of quinhydrone electrode and as an antioxidant.
