Global Management Information Systems:
The Global Management Information System (GMIS) is also referred to as global IT management or international information system. Broadly, the global IT management includes international decision-making units, i.e., countries; multinational enterprises or suppliers of IT, i.e., companies; the groups or teams within the company; the individuals; and the technology. The entities that get affected during the process of managing IT globally are national governments, national and multinational organizations, companies that make use of IS technology, the economic zones, the labor markets within a country, and the consumers. GMIS refers to numerous other disciplines like economics, law, political science, international business, sociology, psychology, cross-cultural studies, computer science, and telecommunications.
To be effective, a GMIS should match with the corporate strategy of the organization. The technological infrastructure of the country or countries in which the organization is planning to operate should support the business processes of the organization in order to facilitate GMIS. The organization should consider the issue of trans-border flow and sharing of data. Some countries might be free with the movement of data while the others may impose regulations due to privacy concerns. Therefore, these aspects should be considered while developing a GMIS. The global IT managers should keep in mind the cultural factors in a particular country before deciding upon developing a GMIS.
The most important point to be considered while developing a GMIS is to match it with the global business strategy of the organization. This process involves properly organizing the information systems function across the various countries where the organization is operating. Organizations that aspire to compete in the international markets should have a thorough knowledge of the trends and changes in those markets. These inputs will, in turn, help the organization to compete within those markets into which it makes an entry.
The nature of the information systems differ from country to country due to cultural differences and managers should keep this aspect in mind. A GMIS should therefore consider the differences in the informational requirements of people from different cultures, the impact of information on people belonging to different cultures, and the level of customization which is required to be undertaken to suit the different cultures.
The Global MIS provides support to the business strategies that are framed by the companies. It helps in coordinating the operations of business organizations through the use of packages like enterprise resource planning (ERP), supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), etc. It helps in developing products and/or services and serving customers globally. GMIS helps in creating core competencies for the organization. For instance, the research and development process can be done in one country, the product can be manufactured in another, sold in a third country, and so on. Through international information systems, organizations can create flexible manufacturing operations. For instance, a company can produce its goods from its facilities located worldwide. Global MIS helps in sharing of resources between organizations. For example, the petroleum and gas companies can share their containers among themselves. Also, a global MIS helps in mitigating the risks that are associated with currency differences and conversions.
