Gay-Lussac's law (Amonton's law)
(1) In the year1802, the French chemist Joseph Gay-Lussac studied the variation of the pressure with temperature and extende the Charle's law so, this law is also termed as Charle's-Gay Lussac's law.
(2) This states that, The pressure of a given mass of a gas is directly proportional to the absolute temperature =degree +273K at constant volume.
Thus, at constant volume and mass
or P = KT = K(t (oC) + 273.15) (where K is constant)
K=P/T or (For two or more gases)
(3) If t = 0oC, then P= Po
Hence, Po = K * 273.15
where αp is the pressure coefficient,
Thus, for every 1o change in temperature, the pressure of a gas changes by of the pressure at 0oC.
(4) This law fails at the low temperatures, because volume of the gas molecules becomes significant.
(5) The Graphical representation of the Gay-Lussac's law : The graph between P and T at constant V is termed isochore.
