Function of Depletion Layer of PN Junction:
The electric field is set up, between donor and acceptor ions in the depletion layer of PN junction .The potential at N-side is higher than potential at P-side. Thus the electrons in N- side are barred to go to the lower potential of P-side. Likewise, holes in P-side find themselves at a lower potential and are prevented to cross the N-side. Therefore, there is a barrier at the junction which opposes movement of the majority charge carriers. The difference of the potential from one side of barrier to the other side of the barrier is called as potential barrier. The potential barrier is about 0.7V for a silicon PN junction and 0.3V for germanium PN junction. The distance from one side of barrier to the other side is called as width of the barrier, which depends on nature of the material.
