First law of thermodynamics
Helmholtz and Robert Mayer proposed the first law of thermodynamics. This law is also called as law of conservation of energy. It states that,
The Energy can neither be created nor be destroyed but it can be converted from one form into another.
E2 - E1 = ΔE= q+w
That is (Change in the internal energy) = (Heat added to the system) +(Work done on the system)
If the system does work (w) on the surroundings, its internal energy decreases. In this particular case, ΔE= q+(-w) = q-w
That is (Change in internal energy)=(Heat added to the system) - (work done by the system)
The correlation between the internal energy, work and heat is a mathematical statement of the first law of thermodynamics.
