The system through which financial assets are produced and channelized is termed as the financial market. When the financial assets transferred are government or corporate securities, the system of transfer is termed as securities market.

Segments of Financial Market

In the securities market, different types of securities are traded. The nature of risk and return involved in long-term securities is immensely different from that of short-term securities. These instruments being close substitutes for money, the market for their trading is known as money market.

Money Market is the major source of working capital funds for business and industry. On the other hand, Capital market is the market segment where securities with maturities of more than a year are purchased and sold.  Preference shares, equity shares, bonds and debentures are the long-term securities  in the capital market.
