Fajan's rule
The magnitude of the polarization or the increased covalent character depends upon the several of factors. These factors are as follows,
(1) Small size of cation: The smaller the size of cation greater is its polarizing power which means greater will be the covalent nature of the bond.
(2) Large size of anion: The Larger the size of an anion greater is its polarizing power which means greater will be the covalent nature of the bond.
(3) Large charge on either of the two ions: As the ion charge increases, the electrostatic attraction of the cation for the outer electrons of the anion also increases with the result its ability of forming the covalent bond increases.
(4) The Electronic configuration of the cation: For the two ions of the same size and the charge, one with a artificial noble gas configuration (That is 18 electrons in outermost shell) will be more polarizing than the cation with noble gas configuration (which is 8 electron in outer most shell).
