Endothermic reactions : The chemical reactions which proceed with the absorption of heat energy are called endothermic reactions. As the heat is added to the reactants in these reactions, the heat absorbed is hear can be indicated by either putting (-) or by writing the actual numerical value of heat on the reactant side
A+B→C+D+q (heat energy)
The heat absorbed at constant temperature and constant pressure measures enthalpy change. Due to the absorption of the heat, enthalpy of products will be more than enthalpy of the reactants. Consequently, ΔHwill be positive for the endothermic reactions.
ΔH=Hp-H; Hp>H; ΔH=+ve
Example :
(iii) The preparation of ozone by passing the silent electric discharged through oxygen is the example of endothermic reaction.
(iv) The evaporation of water is also example of the endothermic reaction.
For exothermic reaction : ΔH or ΔE=-ve
For endothermic reaction : ΔH or ΔE=+ve
