For quite some time, television (TV) set-top boxes have been used for cable TV and, more recently, have been used in connection with digital TV from cable, satellite or broadcast sources. A set-top box contains a processor and memory and is connected between the TV and the source of TV signals as well as to some sort of return connection for data. This connection may be a telephone line via cable, normal copper wires, or
possibly satellite, as shown in Figure.

Modern set-top boxes may have quite considerable processor and memory resources and run software to allow functions such as tuning, TV programme information, access to pay TV, video on demand, interactive TV, and ecommerce.

Set-top boxes use a wide variety of different processors, often specially designed for embedded systems. Java's cross-platform capabilities make it useful for addressing this diverse range of hardware. It is also useful to be able to download software updates or additional functions easily across the cable network or other communications links. Java-enabled set-top boxes can run Java applets effectively because the fast cable or other broadband connection minimizes any delay in downloading the applet code. Another advantage is that Java applications such as browsers or ecommerce systems, written for completely different platforms, such as PCs or PDAs may be readily adapted to run on set-top boxes.

There are Java standards for digital TV set-top boxes as part of J2ME CLDC. The OpenCable Applications Platform (OCAP) standard is aimed at newer digital set-top boxes with substantial resources - typically 8Mb of memory. There is also an emerging standard for the many older digital set-top boxes already in service that typically have fewer resources - perhaps 700Kb of memory or less.
