Dual Formulation Procedure
The mechanics of formulating a dual from the primal problem can be summarized as follows:
1. If in the primal problem the objective function is to be maximized then in the dual problem, it is to be minimized and vice-versa.
2. The unit contribution (profit) constants (cj) of the primal decision variables in the objective function appear as R.H.S. constants of the dual constraints and the primal R.H.S. constants (bj) appear as the unit contribution constants (bj) of the deal decision variables in the objective function.
3. The number of primal decision variables equals the number of dual constraints and the number of primal constraints equals the number of dual variables. Ignoring the number fo non-negativity constraints, if there are n variables and m inequalities in the primal problem, then in the dual problem, there will be m variables and n inequalities.
4. If the inequalities in the primal problem, are of the less than or equal to type then in the dual problem they are of the greater than or equal to type vice-versa.
5. The coefficients (aij) for the dual decision variables in the constrains the coefficients of primal decision variables in the constraints with rows and columns interchanged.
