Drugs and Chemotherapy
Drugs can be a single chemical atom or a combination of two or more different substances. An ideal drug should satisfy the following requirements,
- When administrated to the ailing individual or host, its action could be confined to a small area at the site where it is desired to react. In actual molecule, there is no drug which behaves in this manner.
- It should react on a system with safety and efficiency.
- It should have minimum side effects.
- It could not injure physiological processes or host tissues.
- The cell could not obtain resistance to the drug after sometime.
Very few drugs satisfy all the above needs. Each drug has a best possible dose, below which it has no action and above this level it becomes a poison.
The term chemotherapy, which literally means chemical therapy or chemical treatment was coined in 1913 by Paul Ehrlich, the father of modern chemotherapy. He described chemotherapy as the need of chemicals (drugs) to injure or destroy infections micro-organisms without causing any injury to the host.
Chemicals (drugs) used in chemotherapy are usually classified according to their action.
