Diode Clippers
For the clipping circuit at least 2 components-an ideal diode and resistor are needed and sometimes a DC battery is employed also for fixing the clipping level. The diode behaves as a closed switch when is forward biased and an open switch when is reverse biased. The input waveform can be clipped at various levels by simply changing voltage of the battery and by interchanging positions of the various elements.
Depending upon the orientation of the diode, the positive or negative region of input signal is -clipped off and accordingly the diode clippers can be positive or negative clippers.
There are 2 general categories of clippers: series and parallel. The series configuration can be defined as one where diode is in series with load, while shunt clipper has the diode in a branch parallel to load.
