Deployment on server in ASP.Net:
There are two methods of ASP.Net deployment:
- Local deployment - in that type the entire application is retaining within a virtual directory and all the data and assemblies are having within it and available to the application.
- Global deployment - in that type, assemblies are available to each application executing on the server.
There are different methods used for deployment, however, we will shown the following most related and easiest path of deployment:
- XCOPY deployment
- Copying a Website
- Creating a set up project
XCOPY Deployment:
XCOPY deployment seems creating recursive copies of all the files to the target files on the target machine. You may need any of the commonly used methods:
- FTP transfer
- Using Server Management tools providing replication on a remote site
- MSI installer application
XCOPY deployment simply copies the application file to the given server and set a virtual directory there. You have to set a virtual directory needing the Internet Information Manager Microsoft Management Consol (MMC snap-in).
Copying a Website:
The Copy Web Site option is needed in Visual Studio. It is also required from the Website --> Copy Web Site menu option. This menu items provides copying the current web site to another remote or local location. It is a sort of added FTP tool.
Using this option, you check to the target destination, choose the desired copy mode:
- Overwrite
- Source to Target Files
- Sync UP Source And Target Projects
Then taken with copying the files physically. Unlike the XCOPY deployment, that function of deployment is done from Visual Studio environment. However, there are the subsequent problems with both the given deployment functions:
- You pass on your application code
- There is no pre-compilation and attached error checking for the files
- The master page load will be slow
Creating a Setup Project:
In that function you use Windows Installer and package your web service applications so it is ready to given on the production server. Visual Studio provides you to create deployment packages. Let us check that on one of our existing project, say the data binding application project.
Open the project and take the subsequent steps:
Step (1): Choose File -> Add-> New Project with the website root directory highlighted in the Solution Explorer.
Step (2): Choose Setup and Deployement, under Other Project Types. Select Setup Wizard.
Step (3): Selecting the default location makes sure that the set up project will be located in its folder under the root directory of the site. Click on okay button to get the first splash screen of the wizard.
Step (4): The second part asks to select a project type. Select 'Create a setup for a web application'.
Step (5): Next, the third part asks to select project outputs from all the projects in the solution. Check the check box next to 'Content Files from...'
Step (6): The fourth screen allows adding other files like ReadMe. However, in our process there is no such file. Click on finish.
Step (7): The final screen shows a summary of settings for the set up project.
Step (8): The Set up project is included to the Solution Explorer and the basic design window displays a file system editor
Step (9): Next step is to create the setup project. Right-click on the project explorer in the Solution Explorer and choose Build.
Step (10): When build is finished, you get the subsequent message in the Output window:
Two files are prepared by the build process:
- Setup.exe
- Setup-databinding.msi
You need to go and take these files to the server and double-clicking the setup file will gives the content of the .msi file to be installed on the local server.
