It's working is based on the principle of tangent law. It consist of a small compass needle, pivoted at the centre of a circular box. Tan B position
It a bar magnet is placed on one arm with it's length parallel to arm, so magnetic needle comes under the influence of two mutual perpendicular magnetic field (i) and (ii) Axial magnetic field of experimental bar magnet.
