Covalent, Ionic and Vander waal's radii
The radius of an atom is the distance between the centre of its nucleus and electrons in the last orbit. Though, according to quantum mechanics, there is no assurance about the exact position of electrons at any time. Hypothetically, an electron, at one time, can be very close to the nucleus while at other time it can be far away from the nucleus. Instead of these limitations we are required to have some operational definition of the term atomic radius. There are basic three operational concepts of the atomic radius.
(1) If the bonding is covalent, radius is known as covalent radius.
(2) If the bonding is ionic, the radius is known as ionic radius.
(3) If the two atoms are not bonded by the chemical bond (as in the noble gases) the radius is known as vander Waal's radius.
