Counters
In the digital logic and computing, counter is a device that stores (and at times displays) the number of times a specific event or process has occurred, often in relation clock signal.
- Asynchronous (ripple) counter - changing the state bits are used as clocks to the subsequent state flip-flops
- Synchronous counter - all the state bits change under control of a single clock
- Decade counter - counts through 10 states per stage
- Up-down counter - counts both up and down, under the command of control input
- Ring counter - obtained by a shift register with the feedback connection in a ring
- Johnson counter - it is a twisted ring counter
- Cascaded counter

The counters are specific type of the sequential circuit.
- Like registers, state, or flip-flop values themselves, acts as the "output."
- The output value rise by one on each clock cycle.
- After largest value, output "wraps around" back to 0.
- By using 2 bits, we would get something like this:
