Connecting Signal Diodes in Series
The other application for small signal diode is to generate a regulated voltage supply. Diodes are linked together in series to give a constant DC voltage across the diode combination. The output voltage across diodes remains constant instead of changes in the load current drawn from series combination or alteration in DC power supply voltage which feeds them. Consider the circuit drawn below.
Signal Diodes in Series
As the forward voltage drop across the silicon diode is nearly constant at around 0.7v, while the current through it varies by the relatively large amounts, a forward-biased signal diode can create a simple voltage regulating circuit. The individual voltage drops across each diode are subtracted from supply voltage to leave the certain voltage potential across the load resistor, and in our simple instance above this is given as 10v - (3 x 0.7v) = 7.9v. This is cause each diode has a junction resistance relating to small signal current flowing through it and the 3 signal diodes in the series will have 3 times the value of this resistance, along with load resistance R, forms a voltage divider across the supply.
By adding more diodes in the series a large voltage reduction will occur. Also series connected diodes can be placed in the parallel with the load resistor to behave as a voltage regulating circuit. Here voltage applied to the load resistor will be 3 x 0.7v = 2.1v. We can produce the same constant voltage source by making use of a single Zener Diode. Resistor, RD is used to prevent the excessive current flowing through diodes if the load is removed.
