Common-size statement analysis expresses comparisons in percentages. Each element of the income statement or the balance sheet is expressed as a percentage of a relevant basis. In the case of income statements, the total revenues or sales form the basis, whereas in the case of Balance Sheet, total assets or in other words, total liabilities form the basis. This technique is also referred to as vertical analysis given the up-down (or down-up) movement of our eyes as they review the statements.
