Common Base Configuration
If the base is common to input and output circuits, it is known as common base configuration as shown in figure 1.

For the PNP transistor largest current components are because of holes. Holes flow from emitter to collector and few holes flow down towards ground out of base terminal. The current directions are shown in the figure 1.
(IE = IC + IB ).
For the forward biased junction, VEB is positive and for the reverse biased junction VCB is negative. Complete transistor can be described by following 2 relations, which give the input voltage VEB and output current IC in the terms of output voltage (VCB) and input current IE. VEB = f1(VCB, IE)
IC= f2(VCB, IE)
The output characteristic:
The collector current IC is entirely determined by input current IE and the VCB voltage. The relationship can be given in figure 2. It is a plot of IC and VCB, with emitter current IE as parameter. The curves are called as the output or collector or static characteristics. The transistor consists of the two diodes placed in series back to back (with the two cathodes connected together). The complete characteristic can be divided in main 3 regions.
