Close packing in the crystalline solids

In formation of the crystals, the constituent particles (ions, atoms, or molecules) get closely and intimately packed together. The closely packed set up is that in which the maximum present space is occupied. This corresponds to state of the maximum density. The closer is the packing, the greater is the stability of packed system.

         (1) Close packing in the two dimensions: The two likely arrangement of the close packing in two dimensions.

         (i) The Square close packing: In which spheres in the adjacent row lie just one over the other and shows the horizontal as well as the vertical alignment and forms the square. In this kind of arrangement each of the sphere is in contact with the four spheres.
