Networks are generally classified based on transmission and scale. Virtual private networks, and wireless networks are other categorizations of networks.
Based on transmission, they are classified into point-to-point networks and broadcast networks. Point-to-point networks connect individual pairs of machines. In this type of network, the message has to first visit one or more intermediate machines to travel from source to destination. These networks are also called unicast or one-to-one networks. Point-to-point networks are usually used to cover large areas.
In this network, if Computer A has to send a message to Computer D, then the message has to travel through B, C in order to reach D
Broadcast networks have a single communication channel which is shared by all the machines on the network. These networks are used for sending messages to all the computers on the network. Broadcast networks usually cover small areas.
When Computer A sends a message to Computer D, the message also contains an address field which indicates the computer for which the message is intended. These are broadcast to all the machines. Upon receiving the message, each computer checks the address field. Only the computer for which the message is intended processes the message.
Based on the scale or size/area of networking, networks are classified into local area networks (LANs), metropolitan area networks (MANs), and wide area networks (WANs). The internet can be considered to be a combination of several WANs.
