Based on Form:
Information can also take many forms depending on the way it is presented. The various forms are aural or sound (pitch, tone, words, song), visual (moving as well as still images, pictures, graphs, text), tactile or touch (for instance, a doctor touches the skin of the patient to find out if he/she has fever), olfactory or scent (smell), and taste.
Classification by Professor John Dearden
Professor John Dearden of Harvard University classified information into: action and no-action information, recurring and non-recurring information, and internal and external information.
Action and no-action information
Action information refers to information that induces some action while information that does not induce any action is called no-action information. For instance, the sales report of a company showing a 20% fall in sales would induce some action by the management. Hence, it can be termed as action information. On the other hand, details regarding the inventory on hand at the end of the financial year will not induce any or immediate action. This form of information is only status information and therefore constitutes no-action information.
Recurring and non-recurring information
Information which is generated at frequent intervals of time is called recurring information. Information that is generated once at the end of any particular time period is non-recurring information. For instance, the financial statements of a company are recurring information that recurs periodically every year while a market research study conducted by the company would constitute non-recurring information as it may not be conducted periodically.
Internal and external information
Internal information is that which is generated within the organization and external information is that which is collected from agencies and sources external to the organization. Generally, the operational and middle level managements seek internal information while the top management seeks external information. For instance, internal information would be in the form of monthly financial reports, employee details, inventory reports, etc. External information could include details about the competitors, products and/or services released by those competitors into the market, their features, etc
