Clamping can be taken in use to adapt the input signal to a device which cannot make use of or can be damaged by the signal range of original input.
Principles of operation
The diagram of a clamper reveals that it is a simple device relatively. The 2 components creating the clamping effect are a capacitor, followed by the diode in parallel with load. The clamper circuit is dependent on a change in the capacitor's time constant; this is result of the diode changing current path with the changing input voltage. Magnitude of R and C are selected so τ = RC that is large enough to gurentee that the voltage across capacitor dosen't discharge significantly during diode's "Non conducting" interval. During first negative phase of the AC input voltage, the capacitor in positive clamper charges quickly. As Vin becomes positive, the capacitor serves as a voltage doubler; since it has stored the equivalent of Vin during the negative cycle, it provides around that voltage during the positive cycle; this certainly doubles the voltage seen by load. As Vin becomes negative, the capacitor behaves as a battery of the same voltage of Vin. The voltage source and capacitor counteract each other, resulting in the net voltage of zero as seen by load.
