Charle's law
(1) The French chemist, Jacques Charles first studied variation of volume with the temperature, in the year1787.
(2) This states that, the volume of a given mass of the gas is directly proportional to its absolute temperature =degree C+273 at constant pressure.
Thus, at constant pressure and mass
or V = KT = K(t(oC) + 273.15) , (where k is constant),
K=V/T or (For two or more gases)
(3) If t = 0 oC, then V=Vo
hence, Vo = K * 273.15
where αv is the volume coefficient,
Hence, for every 1 degree C change in temperature, volume of a gas changes by 1/273.15 of the volume at 0 degree C.
(4) The Graphical representation of Charle's law: The graph between V and T at the constant pressure is called as isobar or isoplestics and is always the straight line. The plot of V versus t in degree C at constant pressure is a straight line cutting the temperature axis at -273.15 degreeC. It is the lowest possible temperature.
(5) At constant mass and pressure density of a gas is inversely proportional to it absolute temperature.
Thus,
or
(6) The use of hot air balloons in the sports and meteorological observations is the application of Charle's law.
