Charge carriers in semiconductors
At the high temperature, electrons go from valance band to conduction band and as a result which a vacancy is created in valence band at the place where an electron was present before shifting to conduction band. The valency is a hole and is seat of the positive charge possessing the same value of electron. Thus the electrical conduction in semiconductors is because of motion of the electrons in conduction band and also because of motion of holes in the valence band.
Semiconductor Basics
If the Resistors are most basic passive component in the electrical or electronic circuits, then we have to consider Signal Diode as being the most basic "Active" component. Although, unlike a resistor, a diode does not behave linearly wit h respect to applied voltage as it has an exponential I-V relationship and thus cannot be described simply by using the Ohm's law as we do for resistors. The diodes are unidirectional semiconductor devices which only allow the current to flow through them in one direction only, acts more like a one way electrical valve, (that is Forward Biased Condition). But, before we move to the concepts as how signal or power diodes work we first need to understand their basic construction and concept.
The diodes are made from a single piece of Semiconductor material which has positive "P-region" at one end and negative "N-region" at the other, and which has a resistivity value in between a conductor and an insulator. But what do we mean by "Semiconductor" material; firstly let's look at what makes a material either a Conductor or an Insulator.
