Biased versus non-biased
Using a voltage source and resistor, the clamper can be biased to bind output voltage to a different value. The voltage supplied to potentiometer will be equal to the offset from zero in the case of a positive or negative clamper (the type of clamper will determine the direction of the offset. If the negative voltage is supplied to either positive or negative, the waveform will cross x-axis and be bound to the value of this magnitude on opposite side. Zener diodes can be used also in place of a voltage source and potentiometer, thus setting the offset at the Zener voltage.
Examples
One common clamping circuit of this is the DC restorer circuit in the analog television receiver, which returns voltage of the signal during the back porch of line blanking period to 0V. Since the back porch is desired to be at 0V on transmission, any DC or low frequency hum which has been induced onto the signal can be effectively removed by this method.
