Analysis Flow

Similar to most subjects, the analysis of semiconductor devices is also carried out by beginning from simpler problems and slowly progressing to more complex ones which are described as follows:

(i) Analysis under zero excitation that is equilibrium.

(ii) Analysis under constant excitation or dc or static characteristics.

(iii) Analysis under time varying excitation but with the quasi-static approximation dynamic characteristics.

(iv) Analysis under time varying excitation that is non quasi-static dynamic characteristics.

Although there is zero external current and voltage in the equilibrium, situation inside the device is not so minor. Generally voltages, charges and drift-diffusion current components at any given point within semiconductor cannot be zero.

Equilibrium in semiconductors shows the following:

(i) Steady state: 1556_analysis flow1.png

Here Z is any physical quantity like voltage, charge, electric field etc

(ii) No net electrical current and thermal currents:

As current can be carried by electrons and holes both, equilibrium implies zero values for net electron current and net hole current both. The drift and diffusion components of electron and hole currents are not be zero.

(iii) Constant Fermi energy:
