Accessing the web using Java:

In particular, the important Java class URL provides facilities for accessing resources that are identified by their uniform resource locator or URL.

Many people are broadly familiar with the idea of a URL, such as:

You may be used to thinking of a URL as a web page address, in this case the address of the home page of The Open University. However, the concept of a URL is more general than this and includes other kinds of resources. We shall return to consider URLs in more detail later in this unit.
