All versions of 802.3 have a maximum wire length per segment because long propagation time leads to complexity in collision detection. To recompense for this the transmission time has to be increased which can be achieved by slowing down the transmission rate or increasing the message size, neither of which is desirable. For this cause to allow for lbig networks, numerous cables are connected via repeaters. among any two nodes on an Ethernet network, there can be at most 5 segments, 4 repeaters and 3 populated segments (non- populated segments are those which do not have any machine connected between the 2 repeaters). This is popularly known as the 5-4-3 Rule.
