  • "1. How does Brandon’s expression of emotion help or hinder his interactions with Emily? How does his perception alter his emotions with Emily? Would you say that Brandon isable to express emotions clearly with Emily?Solution:The short film “The most beautiful thing” is based loosely about the notion of dealingwith a disability. The disability that was being portrayed was struggle faced and deaf(Covell,2017). Brandon’s confidence level fell when Emily did not respond to him when he tried to talkto her. He became sad and thought that Emily ignored him and did not respond intentionally.Brandon’s expression of emotion did hinder his interaction with Emily initially. However, laterBrandon found out Emily’s disability that is she is not able to speak and hear. When Brandon came to know about Emily’s disability and noticed that she was trying tocommunicate through writing, he realized that he misunderstood Emily. They startedcommunicating with each other through writing on a notepad. A soft corner was developing inBrandon for Emily. He started liking her and they became close friends. Brandon is not able to express his emotions clearly with Emily. He was hesitating a lot toask Emily out for prom. He was not able to express himself properly. I think Brandon shouldhave started to engage himself in conversation with Emily. For example, when Brandon sawEmily with another guy, he misunderstood the situation and ignored her. He was sad. Brandonwas missing her as well. But still he did not express his emotions and did not even convey that hewas missing her. If Brandon would have expressed his thoughts and what he saw to Emily, therewould have been no place for misunderstanding. As we learned in Chapter-4, perception checking is very important. Brandon should havefollowed three parts of perception checking. To observe the situation with a cool mind is the firststep. Next, two possible interpretations should be given. Finally, a request should be made forclarification. 2. What benefits do you see occurring when Brandon begins to let his emotions surface? How does this then affect his ability to communicate?Solution:A bond started to develop between Brandon and Emily. They started to connect well witheach other. They started to spend time with each other. They became good friends. Brandondeveloped feelings for her. However, he could not express the same. There was increase ininteraction between Brandon and Emily. Even, Emily liked his company. She even started tomiss him when Brandon did not meet her one day. It is clear that a close bond was growing whenBrandon allowed his emotion to surface. As they were becoming close to each other, Brandonencourages Emily to talk in public for the first time. 3. Self-talk affects the way that Brandon interacts with Emily. Review pages 143-145regarding this concept. You will want to develop three different interpretations of whatBrandon or Emily experience as they struggle with self-talk within this movie. You willwant to identify the event, the thought he/she has, and the emotion that may be felt. Youwant to replicate the event, thought, and emotion as seen on page 145. Then, identify why itis significant to identify these various reflections.Solution:Self-talk is regarded as the inner dialogue that is there in our mind about everything wethink about, dream or wish of. Self-talk helped Brandon to raise his self-confidence and restrictnegative emotions. When Brandon saw a guy coming and sit beside Emily, and Emily giving a smile at her,he could not go in front of Emily. Brandon left the place and did not even inform Emily what wesaw and that he felt bad. Brandon was unhappy. He did not meet Emily the next day. Brandonagain started feeling lonely.Brandon wanted to ask Emily to go to the prom with him. However, he was not able toexpress this in front of Emily. It may be that Brandon was too shy to approach Emily and ask herout for prom or it may be that he was afraid that she might reject her proposal. When Brandon did not meet Emily, she missed him. However, Emily conveyed this toBrandon. Emily got attached to Brandon. That is why Emily realized Brandon’s absence. Sheeven tried to speak in public with Brandon("Analysis of short film 'The most beautiful thing'(2012)", 2017).Identification of various reflections is important to apply perception checking. Instead ofgetting angry or taking drastic action, it is important to observe the situation, provide possibleinterpretation and request a clarification. This will eliminate negative emotions. 4. What aspect of The Most Beautiful Thing was the most meaningful to you in regards toirrational thinking and debilitative emotions? Why? How would you be able to make thisconnect to a personal experience? What could you do to handle these fallacies better?Solution:One day it was spotted by Brandon that Emily was being kissed by another guy. He wentaway in a rage and did not see Emily hit her and walk away from there. He became depressedand lost his concentration. He was hurt. Emily was not aware of this negative thought and hardfeeling that Brandon was carrying. Emily gained courage finally and spoke out loud to Brandon.Brandon also got the courage to ask her for prom. Everything got resolved in the meeting bychance in the hallway. The way Brandon reacted on seeing another guy kissing Emily is something that usuallyoccurs. When we face such things, we lose our temper and our ability to think logically. Wedon’t even feel like asking for an explanation or what the matter actually is from the otherperson. It happened with me as well. Few weeks back, I had a fight with my partner and we werenot talking to each other. Then I found that my cousin has been talking with my partner overphone. I got this information from my cousin’s call list. I was checking her cell phone for someother reason and I saw this. I became very angry and thought that both of them were cheating onme. I even stopped talking to my cousin. I did not even seek clarification from both of them. Iwas badly hurt. Then, one day my partner came to my house and we finally had a talk. I came toknow that my partner used to call my cousin every day and asked about me. I felt so guilty at thattime. I apologized to both of them. This kind of irrational thinking actually occurs often.Perception checking is vital to avoid such things. We should not be angry at the first gowithout analyzing the situation. Communication is something which is critical in all aspects. Itshould never be stopped. It is important to observe the situation first and then provide interpretation for the same. It is necessary to ask for clarification and know the reason behind thesituation that gave rise to negative feelings and emotions.ReferencesAnalysis of short film 'The most beautiful thing'(2012).(2017).
