References……………………………………………………………………………..… Overview of the ProjectEvery academic institute requires maintenance of proper record of attendance of itsstudents for good functioning of its academic structure. The daily process of recording andmanaging attendance records of a large university’s student is a tedious task and consumes bothpaper and time of faculties and students. This project has been undertaken with an objective todevelop a networked student attendance monitoring system based on fingerprint recognitiontechnology. The main motivation behind the project is to have a system which can record theattendance of students of a large university with ease and provide accurate attendanceinformation to its stakeholders. The proposed system does away with the traditional hassle of rollcalling thus bringing time richness to both faculties and students of the institute. Biometric Identification Systems are widely used for establishing unique identity ofhuman beings and are employed mainly for verification and identification purposes. It is one ofthe most well-established methods for identity access management and access control. There aremany different types of biometric systems available like face recognition, iris recognition, palmrecognition, fingerprint matching etc. For the proposed project, we have chosen the fingerprintmatching technology for recording and managing attendance records. The trick of achieving anefficient attendance monitoring system using biometric is to have an efficient and fast fingerprintmatching algorithm. Requirements The functional requirements of the system are broken down into the following sub- systems:1. Attendance recording sub-system: Allows student to mark their attendance for the allowedclass session2. Attendance processing sub-system: Maintain logins for faculty and staff members of theuniversity, allows faculty to approve or disapprove the attendance of students3. Fingerprint recognition sub-system: Perform recording, retrieval and matching of humanfingerprints from the database.4. Attendance reporting sub-system: Responsible for generating multiple levels of reports forattendance of students. 4.1. A monthly report shall be sent to the student.4.2. Real-time attendance report availability for the faculty.4.3. Real-time attendance report availability for the institute head.4.4. Attendance report of faculty and staff.4.5. Attendance defaulters report.4.6. Attendance report with special advanced search features.5. Administrative tasks sub-system : This shall allow the system administrator to log into thesystem with a special administrative privilege account and perform following actions:5.1. Adding new student5.2. Modifying information for an existing student5.3. Deleting student record or information The following listing describes the hardware requirements of the system:1. Fingerprint scanner 2. Display module/LCD3. Computer or portable device4. LAN connectivityDesignHow will be the attendance managed? All the hardware will be installed classrooms and/or other places such as conferencehalls, computer labs etc. where student attendance needs to be recorded. This shall reduceoutside interference. For keeping the equipment safe from unauthorized access, it shall be placedinside a small cabin. Upon entry into the classroom, the faculty shall enter his/her unique codefor the class session on the system panel giving a go-ahead to start the attendance process. This isto prevent students from marking false attendance. Upon receiving the correct faculty code, thesystem shall be ready to receive attendance entries. Students shall be required to press theirfingers on top of the equipment to mark their attendance. There shall be lock-in period (defaultset to 15 minutes) after which no attendance entry shall be allowed or entry shall be marked aslate entry in the system. The lock-in period can be configured in the system as per individualrequirements against the faculty’s code. The figure below illustrates the attendance recordingprocess. The database shall maintain records in an entity with attributes such as day, roll, subject, attendance and semester. To view real-time attendance reports, a website shall be hosted onuniversity’s servers which shall run SQL queries to retrieve the relevant fields from the database. The figure below illustrates the attendance recording and management process.Network ManagementThe attendance monitoring system shall be installed over wide networks in classrooms, seminar and conference halls, labs, library etc. via Intranet as well as Internet. The figure belowillustrates the proposed network design. The fingerprint equipment can also be replaced with a portable device which shall makethe attendance recording process all the more easier. The portable devices can as simple as amobile phone. It must come along with embedded finger print scanner, wireless connectivity, amicroprocessor loaded with the proposed application and a display terminal. The figure belowillustrates the use of a portable device for the proposed system.System Development MethodologyThe proposed system will be developed using the classic life cycle system developmentmethodology which is also known as waterfall development model popularly. Using this development methodology, the requirements will be well known beforehand asit shall be essential for us to have a stable product definition in this case. The main phases of thismethodology are analysis, design, coding & testing and implementation & maintenance. It isplanned that the team shall produce a functional specification (describing what the applicationwill perform) and a user interface specification (describing how the application will performwhat it is supposed to do). The coding phase shall commence only after these two documents areready and reviewed. The documents themselves will be written after the requirement gatheringexercise is completed successfully. Using this development model, it is essential to freeze uponthe product requirements early to avoid the burdening costs involved with revisiting therequirements and doing design related changes. The beauty of waterfall model is that it isplanned in a way that complete system will be delivered with all working features; even theappearance of the software is fully specified and understood beforehand."
