Introduction 1.1 General background for the studyAfrica has long used road transport to move goods throughout the continent. There are manysocial issues associated with this, as truck drivers spend long periods away from home in order tomaintain a steady income. With over 80% of goods moved by road, the trucking industry has ahuge impact on the economy in the region, and bureaucratic processes at each border post lead toongoing delays for many trucks that are either transiting or importing goods.Along with the trucking economy comes the informal sex-trade.Truck drivers away from homefor long periods of time, and particularly in developing economies, frequently use the services ofsex-workers, and this is often found as a way to pass time during the breaks in border crossingformalities. The link between the sex-trade and truck drivers has been on the radar of many agencies workingwith HIV/AIDS for the past 15 years, though few inroads have been made in reducing thetransmissions of the disease between these two high-risk groups. Most of the work done thus farhas been in education and distribution of condoms, rather than trying to limit the time andopportunities for the two groups to complete a transaction. This research proposal aims to complement the work already being done, providing logisticalchanges to border crossing procedures that can reduce the amount of time truck drivers arespending at each border post, hence reducing the amount of new HIV/AIDS cases being reportedeach year.3 "
